Hi Kim,

In the deep and murky past, before I had such a tool as you describe, I was able to MacGuyver a flywheel off an engine on several occaisions.

I have used a coat-hanger wire to hold the flex plate on an automatic.

To connect a standard flyheel I once bolted a six foot 2x4 to the flywheel using the pressure plate bolt holes. That gave me plenty of leverage to torque the flyheel.

The special tool is very handy, but there are lots of alternatives that can be brought to bear in a pinch.
