In regards to the sound, my first thought would be throw out bearing.

Have a listen while in neutral. Depress the pedal, then let it up. If
you hear the sound while pedal down, and/or while on it's way up, this
*may* mean TOB.

The other alternative could be something related to the input shaft. I
would imagine that if that were the case, the sound would be happening
with clutch pedal up. I recall this happening on an old Volvo of mine.
Warming it up in the morning, it made a horrid racket until I pushed
the clutch pedal down which disengaged the clutch thus stopping the
input shaft stopped turning. Turned out to be the input shaft
bearing(s).
