Absolute best stuff is Caig Deoxit. It comes in a bunch of different forms, choose your weapon: http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?webpage_id=3&SO=2&CATID=38&ObjectGroup_ID=177

After getting the contacts clean and protected, get some 3M Scotch 2155 rubber splicing tape. I think most of the big box hardware stores (Lowe's, Home Depot) carry it. It bonds to itself (make sure you remove the thin liner as you apply it). Start well back on the cable away from the connector, and wrap overlapping by 1/2 (stretch it well), until well past the connector. Then use 3M Super 33 electrical tape over the whole thing. If you really want to do it right, then put 3M Scotchkote over the whole thing. Now you're ready to leave it in a bucket of water without worry. If you ever need to remove it, just slice it straight with a razor knife.
