I bet the higher cost of diesel might be offset by the better fuel efficiency from diesel motors. Something else to consider is your climate. Diesels do have some drawbacks when driven in very cold climates. "Equivalent Japanese motors" meaning something small-ish in size and weight might be a very good alternative to the VW inline four motors, which seem to be 'crude but effective'when compared. Sticking with 'all VW' by using a Rabbit-style motor has a some up-sides..like many interchangable parts with the WBX and VW mechanics will work on it, maybe even cheerfully and effectivly. My take, from lurking over on the Subie list, is those motors are great, once the install is complete and de-bugged. Their drivers report good power and reliability, but often mention a slight reduction in gas mileage from the WBX motor in exchange for that extra power. Getting them worked on is sometimes mentioned as 'problematic' also, but the Subie conversion list is full of great information for doing your own work. Don Hanson
