Yeah, I've been meaning to try covering grounds with petroleum jelly too. 
My battery terminals never corrode or get acid build up on them, just never,
on about 8 running cars. Glad yours is running again. 
 
 Sitting around not running is rough on vheciles. So is short periods of
operation.  Kind of a toss up - just let it sit, or operate it for short
periods during the winter - both are bad kinda.

  I do the same thing with WD-40, it has kept many of my cars in nicer shape

under the hood than just doing nothing.  I second the idea on the grounds, 
but add this to it;  I coated mine thickly with petroleum jelly to shed 
water and prevent corrosion from being able to take hold at these critical 
points.
  I remember years ago, when I saw that some people did this with thier 
battery terminals.  It does work great, but is kind of messy if you have to 
open that connection later.
