dear neil
i made that journey with my 1989 California edition 1.6 diesel ...
averaged 38 miles to the gallon maintained an average speed of 75 MPH
the only issue i had was on the return journey after we went to from powell
river bc to las angeles then east to ohio then south to arkansas and then
west again ...
after all that we broke a v belt on the water pump just outside king city
california ...
saved by triple a premium plan which towed us to salinas where we repaired
ourselves in the parking lot of vw dealer ...
thank you manny the service writer ...
now niel we have a 1.9 to power our van after a similar experience outside
boise that caused some waste from the failed belt to fly into timing belt
cover and cause timing failure ...
the 1.9 is a little harder on fuel ...
have a great journey
yours

There are two kinds of jobs in the world:
Picking up garbage and telling people things.
Successful people do both, with the same good attitude. (riw)
