Volks, I'm reassembling the dash on my 91 Vanagon GL after opening the heater case and replacing the front heater core and blower motor, and while I was at it, the foam rubber covering the various vent flaps. The control cables are all in good shape but it seems like a good time to lubricate them with some sort of penetrating oil. However there is no sign of any existing lubricant, so maybe it's not necessary or even a bad idea (the wrong lube might rot the plastic casing)? To lube or not to lube?
