Hell the vultures have always been around, before the inline 4 there were the 911 or the Corvair vultures as well in bays and even in vanagons (yes I've owned a Corvair powered Vanagon briefly, though I've never seen another.) As long as a VW van has existed someone has wanted it to go faster than it did from the factory. Some of us even go in waves, from stock to stock parts modified, to inline, to stock, to Subaru, and back to stock. The quest for the right poweplant can be ever ongoing based on what you feel like at the moment.
