The 5W-40 (5 Winter 40) just means that in cold weather a cold engine will see it as 5 weight and when the engine is warm it'll see it as 40 weight. At operating temperature, the engine wouldn't be able to tell the difference between that and 10W-40.

In northern Maine winters I'll use a 5W-50 or even a 0W-50 synthetic as, at our minus temperatures, the engine wouldn't start otherwise.
