Here's a bit of useful info when using ETKA or the vagcat site when working with Vanagon listings:

Originally on the Parts Fiche set, VW divided the listings of Vanagon parts into 80-85, 86-87 and 88-92. Although these divisions aren't seen when using ETKA/vagcat, the parts text listings still are however in a very subtle fashion as the divisions were carried over when the fiche were digitized.

Using Paul's example of having to go to the 1988 listing to see parts for his 1987 engine, therein lies a potential problem and that is the parts text listings for his 1987 model *MAY NOT* be accurate, because the text listings *MAY* have changed between 1987 and 1988, especially when considering VIN and engine divisions for components. In otherwords, 1988 listings shown are the same for 88-92 models and nothing will show of any VIN/Engine Number changes for 86-87 (or 80-85 for that matter). OTOH, it's possible that the engine parts text listings *MAY* be identical 87 or 88 on the original different fiche, but I wouldn't take that chance as a potential incorrect part number may be selected (and I hate having to return incorrect parts!)

NOTE: The images remained the same, regardless of the year period with one exception - if there were item diagrams for lets say 88-92 models (specific for that year period), they wouldn't show up on 80-85 or 86-87 listings. The same applies in the reverse - a diagram specific for 80-85 won't show up in the 86-87 or 88-91 listings and something for 86-87 will not show up elsewhere either.

This is why it is important to select the actual year model when using ETKA or vagcat.

As a matter of habit because I know the (parts group divisions from experience), when I want to look up anything for my 84's, I usually select 1985. On my friend's 86, I usually select 1987 and on my boss' 90, I select 1992 because I know that those selections will include those parts text listings from the year periods I mentioned above. In the case of Syncros, there was only 1 Parts Fiche, so selecting any year will give you the info needed, regardless if you're working on a 86 or a 91.

Other VW models that use multiple Parts Fiche during their production are mainly the Watercooled models (especially 75-84 Rabbit - there were 5 different Parts Fiche year series). This made keeping track of them a real PITA back then. With ETKA, selecting the actual year made it a lot easier to accurately look up the parts desired. -- Jim Thompson 84 GL 1.9 "Gloria" 84 Westfalia 2.1 "Ole Putt" 73 K Ghia Coupe "Denise" 72 411 Station Wagon "Pug" oldvolkshome@gmail.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************************** On Thu, May 1, 2008 at 7:01 AM, Paul Guzyk <paullist08@guzyk.com> wrote:
