I've never had air in my brake lines, so I don't know what that feels like--- mushy, I'd expect--- but my brakes have done just what you describe when my master cylinder has needed replacing. Brakes work fine, but under constant pressure fluid leaks past the piston seals and the pedal slowly sinks to the floor? Seen it in three different cars.
