To me it sounds like your shifter is just out of adjustment (could be due to the rod bushings, but maybe just out of alignment). That buzzing can definitely happen when things are just a spec out of adjustment. And certainly having that out of adjustment can make you lose 1 or usually 2 gears. Good guides on how do do this in the archives. - Also in Bentley. Pull the boot up inside the van and make sure the holes are lined up (wait... do the 84's have those holes...better check Bentley on that) then, Basically go to that center part of the rod, just behind your mid cross member under the van, and loosen the nut with a 12 mm or 13 mm wrench (I think) and rotate the front part of the rod one click clockwise as you look down it toward the front of the van. This will likely make it easier to get 1 and 2. If things are worse, just go on click back, and then it is sort of a guess and check game. Pretty easy though.

If it is the transmission, someone who knows more about that may jump in.
