Aileen,
  Don't know how similar your distributor is to my '84 1.9's, but you might want to check the secondary wires going through the distributor housing to the electronic sensor inside. Mine ran great  . .  then awful or wouldn't  even start randomly for a few years, until I was tipped off to these wires going bad and shorting to ground and wreaking havoc. Black smoke, stalling out, etc.
  Then I discovered this board, and that this was an all to common occurrence.

  This was a few years ago, but at the time, I was able to buy just the electronics and not the whole distributor.
