I just recently took my '84 Westy in for it's annual motor vehicle inspection to Canadian Tire. They rejected it because they said all my wheel bearings were loose. I tried re-torquing the rear ones but it did not remove the very slight wiggle when pushing/pulling the wheels at 12 and 6. They do not wiggle at all when grabbing at 3 and 9. I adjusted the front ones that have maybe 20K on them and they have about the same amount of wiggle as the rear wheels when rocking them at 12 and 6.

Is this normal? Should I take it back and tell them this is normal for Vanagons and see what they say? Or are my bearings/spacers in need of replacement? Thanks

Thanks Frank. I checked with my VW parts store back home and he says it is the same part numbers for Bays as Vanagons. One more question - should the spacer be replaced every time or can it be reused? In my situation, the only damaged part is the left outer bearing - no damage to the stub shaft or spacer (thankfully).

Also, is there any reason the spacer currently on it would not be the correct size? I know the history and previous owners of my van and know for a fact that the rear wheel bearings have never been replaced. So it stands to reason that the spacer currently on it is from the factory.

Andrew, under some circumstance the spacer wears at the ends and becomes shorter. Like I said, the length is critical, so if it is not the length of a new one, which I have with the listing for that part on my _Vanagon Items Forsale_ (http://members.aol.com/Fkc43/sales.htm) webpage. That's why I posted the listing of the spacer with my message to the List this morning, so all could know what the length of a new one is. This critical dimension is not in the Bentley Bible !!
