Hi folks,

I had an '84 Vanagon Westy for 16 years and 250k, and just jumped back on the list for awhile just for fun. I did this conversion, and it's nice. You keep your exhaust system, and use a 1.9 water pump, but that's it. The ECU and wiring are the same. Pretty straight forward. The problem with the 2.1s is they tend to throw rods if the bearings are worn, so it's not a bad idea to add an oil pressure gauge.

Here is a detailed write up from someone else who has done this: http://www.oldvolkshome.com/19to21.htm

What do you all think about putting a 2.1 in an 84 1.9? Would it be worth it if it ran well and used less oil than my 1.9? I don't plan on rebuilding it, just resealing the heads and installing it. What are some things to look out for? I would need the computer/harness yeah? What else? Thanks!
