I was down at the NW Foreign auto parts (Lacey WA) to get a new square filter this afternoon (the guy speaks VW...) and I mentioned my noisy pump. He recalled something about the 84 return line (on the tank) being too close to the pump intake line, this causing bubbles or some such and more noise from the pump... it was one of those thought/remembrances that come from somewhere in the back of the mind...
