You must not be aware of the Oettinger WBX 6 cylinders (both 3.2 and 3.7)
that was sold overseas.

Oh john, it says 2.1 'six cycle."
Obviously the poster doesn't' know what they are talking about or it's a
typo.
There is NO 6 cylinder opposed ari cooled vw engine.
The closest to that is the Porsche opposed OHC six, and Porsche themselves
put them into a vanagon for a Dakar chase and support vehicle.
There is an Otmar 6 cylinder waterboxer type engine.
And they have been in vanagons I believe.
There is just SO MUCH 'urban myths' and bull in the vw world it is hard to
deal with sometimes.
Hey ! ......I've got this really, really rare vanagon for you
It has a very rare DOHC inline 6 turbo diesel engine , a 1.6 four taken to 6
cylinders and made DOCH ......, and it's not the VW truck engine like that
that one shows up in 240 Volvo's either . and it's got twin turbos too !
Very rare factory prototype.
And I don't want even that much for it. Has twin intercoolers on the roof
too.
You should get it from me.
They only made 6 of them, honest.
Rare factory prototype.
Showroom condition too, only 14,000 original miles.
Rare Porsche 'Guards Red' paint, alloy wheels, and sun roof. Rare 6 speed.
AC and PS. Very rare factory build-in rest room.
Original factory build sheet, matching numbers. This is one you don't want
to miss. AWD too.

Looks like there may have been a mid year change over or picture
re-use. Found an 89 on thesamba that has AC controls on the dash. Oh
well.
I did, however, find this interesting 89 for sale:
<http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=598296>
It has the exceptionally rare air-cooled 2.1 six-cycle engine!
aren't the six cycles something like
intake-compression-combustion-exhaust-depression-acceptance?
