One option that would be technically painless would be to start a new domain, dump the current subscriber list into some more modern list management system such as Mailman, and not look back. This is pretty much what happened with the Mercedes-oriented mail lists at mbz.org -- folks got tired of endless technical problems, and finally another list member founded his own list and everyone moved.
