Batteries in series (Batt 1 + to vehicle + / Batt 1 - to Batt 2 + / Batt 2 - to vehicle -) will add the voltages together, not the AH capacity. Batts wired in parallel (vehicle - to Batt 1 - to Batt 2 - / vehicle + to Batt 1 + to Batt 2 +) will keep voltages the same but add AH capacities.

It is possible to wire four 6V batts in series/ parallel to get both 12V AND increased total AH capacity.
