PLEASE .........do tell about this diaphragm-valve thing inside the oil breather tower On a waterboxer vanagon. Where did you get that ?

And where are the vacuum lines or whatever that go to the diaphragm operated valve ? I have enough of them to cut one open on a table saw if need be.

In that the crankcase breather tower isn't just an oil separator, and has a diaphragm operated valve inside, is there a way of testing these things or do we just assume that after 20 or so years the diaphragm is likely bad and replace the tower ... for something like $90.00?
