Thanks, Jonathan. I'm not familiar with what came on air cooled Vanagons but I am familiar with the breather towers on wasserboxers. By your description, they are different. First, the only way to get the top off the ones for wasserboxers is with a saw. The top is molded in place.

Anyway, on mine, there is never any restriction from the crankcase end to the hose to the throttle body. I can suck or blow and the air path is straight through. Obviously, my diaphragm is shot so I'm ordering a new tower.
