Some solar collectors have a clear glass cover and black pipes/interior. Makes me think one could use 1 liter plastic bottles inside a matt black box, no?

Be interested in seeing the plumbing setup. I think you are right about the cork. Probably one tube to the bottom and the other at the top of the bottle. Maybe in series from bottom to top with a manifold at each end.
