Both of my daughters have Mex Jettas, one a '96, the other a '97. The only electrical issue has been with the ignition coil, with which both had problems. The plastic potting cracks and you get arc-over in humid conditions. Under $100 for a replacement. Other than that, no electrical problems. Both are around 150K miles now, I think.

To answer your question, I wouldn't expect Golfs to be any different than Jettas.
