If Ron does not want to give up the DNS name to another person, it would be understandable since it's probably worth a fair amount of money, can we get him to turn vanagon.com into a redirect to some new site?

Or perhaps we could create a corporation, elect a board, blah blah and then get Ron to hand over control of vanagon.com to that entity instead of an individual? It's not too difficult or expensive to do this, I've been involved in a few nonprofit hobby-type groups that have done similar things.

I think that people are quite used to "vanagon.com" being the mailing list -- seems unwise to give it up. But I'm sure we could come up with some other catchy DNS name, provided that Ron could redirect vanagon.com to it.
