"Refrigerator" is often abbreviated either as "reefer" or "refer." "Reefer" is the older and more common spelling.

Reefer –noun Slang. a marijuana cigarette. [Origin: 1930–35; prob. < MexSp grifa; see griefo] Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

Reefer –noun Informal. 1. a refrigerator, esp. one large enough to be walked into. 2. a refrigerator car, ship, truck, etc. [Origin: 1910–15; alter. and shortening of refrigerator] Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.1) Based on the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006.

I'm sticking to "reefer" instead of "refer" when discussing refrigerators.
