Pictures are an annoyance for those with low bandwidth -- links to them make them optional.

HTML email consumes bandwidth and opens the door to various security issues, phishing attacks, etc.

Plain text, no graphics or attachments. Simple, lightweight, usable.

If advertising would help support operational expenses, I certainly would not object to a one or two line "footer" on messages linking to vendors such as Bus Depot, Vanagain, etc. if they were inclined to pay for it.
