You know about the filter screen in the PS res, right ? Hope there isn't metal in there, and clean it out.

YES, same ATF, and yes, change it, several times. Do Add an power steering conditioner and stop leak - a quality one.

If miles are high......hope that you can massage it back to health with just cleaning and fluid changing. Scott www.turbovans.com

you can not change fluids enough in 20 year old vanagons. You never get 100 % of it out anyway, so change once a year or so. Vanagon PS is not the world's best lasting system. They are fairly good though.

I have a possibly sad little question but can't find any info online about it oddly enough.

The steering on my van is sounding a bit grindy. I'm wondering if maybe i need to change the power steering fluid. It feels kind of tight to turn at first run but then gets better. Also, i know it's ATF fluid that goes in but is that the same ATF that goes into the transmission? I know this is a dumb question but i thought best ask rather than put something scary in there!!

thanks in advance, Karen 85 Vanagon GL
