I found that on the 1.9 I parted out:

The bracket was shot.

Hopefully the new owner of the engine paid heed to my suggestion to replace my temporary fix.

One thing I didn't mention on the page is the one (!) fastener, a bolt, holding the bracket to the block, had worn the hole to a somewhat oval shape.

I'd say consider yourself lucky and wise to address this problem now. --- :^)
