Well, I can't speak for experience camping with a young child.  But I camp all year around here in Oregon, and like you, will not run the heat at night.  Good sleeping bags do help, but the real difference was putting a fleece liner inside the 20 degree bag.  No more drafts through the zipper!  Your biggest problem will be in the morning, deciding who gets up to light off the heater and put the water on to boil *smile* My recommendation would be to keep everyone together on the bottom bunk (for warmth).
