I can add more anecdotal evidence. After putting in a new bosch pump, it still was noisy. So I ran an new input line into a gas can and the noise went away....and I filled my gas tank at the same time. It pumps it back into the tank fairly quickly. A new gas tank fixed the issue.

OK, folks, one more time just to fill up the archives ! The OEM gas tanks have a problem and it cannot be repaired. When they become blocked and restrict the flow of gas to the pump the pump will starve for fuel. When the pump is starved for fuel it whines because the lubrication of the ball bearings in side is the FUEL ! Those gas tanks have a screen filter housed inside a sealed metal box at the bottom of the tank. The outlet and return lines to that box inside the tank are made of RUBBER or some similar product, that after all these years is disintegrating. So..... you cannot replace those rubber lines and you cannot clean that screen. UNLESS you cut the tank open and go in that way, then weld the tank back together, as was done by a friend in Mexico as there was no choice other than wait for very long time to have a new tank shipped down there ! ALL Vanagons will eventually have this problem sometime in their life. Now, this story is in the archives one more time !
