Whalen Island is a nice little place with trails and beach walks. Also
a stones throw from Pacific City where my friend Paul lives. I really
like that place! Get there early if you can to snag a good spot,
otherwise you will be in the overflow area. It's the open grassy area
on the left after you cross the little bridge. Not as much privacy, but
it's still nice to be there. I believe you can dig clams in the small
bay.
But... I'm not too crazy about sand city (just north of Whalen and
within earshot) due to the roar of ATV's and 2 cycle noise makers
ripping across the dunes. Bad idea, in my opinion and it impacts a
large area. Same with parts of the dunes between Florence and Coos
Bay. I know lots of folks have fun with those things, but I personally
think it comes at too high a cost in terms of bothering animals,
humans and polluting the atmosphere. Maybe it will be more peaceful
now that gas is almost $4 a gallon.
Have fun!

June 7 is Oregon State Parks free camping day, so I booked the weekend at Cove Palisades again this year. Last year that campground was half empty, a big surprise for the weekend after Memorial Day, and Saturday night turnd out to be free camping. What a deal! But I digress...all set up to camp Memorial Day Weekend at Whalen Island. It's a Tillamook County Park, on the Sandlake Estuary. I am digging all this talk of camping!
