It might be tough to find as searching on "spare tire carrier" would
produce so many hits, but somewhere deep in the archives - like maybe in
the '99-'00 range - there is a discussion on this topic. I recall
there was a specific recommendation of vehicle and that it was preferred
because it swung open to the driver's side rather than vice-versa so
that one would not have to continually walk around it when moving from
the slider to the hatch and back, e.g. at a campsite
Remember, you can fit a 215/75R15 tire in the stock location, aired-down,
using the custom carrier van-cafe sells... I think it's like $75.
Depending on your scrounging talents, you could make one yourself for
next to nothing if you have even very basic welding skills.

Sorry I missed making a timely reply to the recent spare tire carrier
thread.
Has anyone had experience taking a swing-away tire carrier off another
model
vehicle (SUV) at a pick and pay and fitting it to their vanagon? I
would love to have a Gary Lee carrier, but but my budget won't permit it
now.
With all those many models of big and small SUVs out there (in the junk
yard), surely one model would match up to the vanagon.

Ask Karl Mullendore, he has done this. I just saw one he installed on his
van. I "think" it was from a RAV-4.
