No Sir...........
i will tell you EXACTLY the skinny on going to the DMV with your CA
registered van.
first there are NO SMOG CHECKS in Oregon anywhere, except in the
Portland area and the Rogue Valley ( medford- ashland ) where i am.
They will VIN check it, so drive it to the DMV.
go in, tell them you now live in oregon- when i did this just yesterday
with my old mercedes with Wa plates- they said
'do you live in oregon?"
do you have an Oregon drivers's license?"
'is the car here now?"
i answered yes to all 3 questions -they said fill out this form, wait
for your number to be called.
so they might want you to get an Or driver's license first.
but other than looking at the VIN on the car - they don't care.
they don't care if it was a diesel and now it's a Suabur gasoline
engine or whatever.
They simply are not interested in it smog wise in anyway.
there WAS a deal in Oregon where campers cost more, like double to register,
I beleieve that went out Jan 1 of this year.
They also do two years at a time.
Yesterday, on my 38 year old Mercedes, to transfer the title to Oregon
registration........you know waht i mena, and get plaes and tags for two
years...........cost $ 120.00.
Bring proof of insurance of course on the vehicle.
There are no safety inspections.
I 'was' told by the allways difficult Ashland DMV ( never go there)
.....i had this parts van or something i thought i might want an orgeon
title for ( was Wa) ............they said 'has to be running, has to
have all equip liight lights working' etc.........
of course i am like .................what , it's a parts van. And it
still has Wa plates on it, and i let the reregistration lapse.
But of the several out of state cars i've taken to the DMV to title in
oregon...............
THE ONLY thing they have ever done is look at the two VIN tags, I could
have a Stinger Missile mounted on the roof and i don't think they'd
notice. I've had a non VW gasoline engine in a diesel van ( the 5th
digit of the VIN tells which type of engine the van left the factory
with , B = gas, G = diesel, very logical - in geman perhaps ! )
...............but i've had that weird combo, and due to the age of the
van.......
they never said boo about engine or whatever. That particular van had a
Wa title that said 'gas- passenger' but when i got my Oregon
title...........their system flagged as a diesel by the VIN - and the
Oregon title said 'diesel'.
but you won't have any of that.
and if it's like Medford is, their soul ( sole ? ) interest in the van
will be to check the VIN , both of them. ( there's a 3rd hidden one too ) .
It could be different in Bend, but i doubt it.
But I've been to the Medford DMV about 8 times in 5 years or so, always
smooth.
it's like the old days.......
you just go in, say i want to title this car in Oregon to me, they say
'fill out this form', ' give us your money.'
they give you the plates and year and month tags, , and YD- you're done.
there is a nice Crater Lake license plate, it's an extra $ 20. and one
time only fee, and that money goes to Crate Lake they say, and i did
that on one of my vans.
There are also salmon license plates or whatever.
yesterday the guy asked me 'do you just want the pine tree ones? "
.................i said'just the basic ones, yes ' ...........those are
the standard plates, but look into their Crater Lake plate- that will
make you look like a clued-in Native !!
you asked, there you go. More than you wanted !!

Rogue Valley - Medford-Ashland, Southern Oregon.,
Vanagon engine conversion specialist, vanagon restoration and 'saving '
vanagons etc.
BTW,
There's this fancy coffee shop down town, in Bend, in the cool part -
Italian flavor type place- not a starbucks.
I haven't been there, but the owner is a vanagon guy.
Can't think of his name right now. He and his wife and i 3 kids were
stuck on this side of the Cascades a few months ago, with a vanagon that
could only go 20 mph, working together at me shop we fixed it - water in
the fuel, and got them home.
So ask in that coffee shop, and you'll have a vanagon friend perhaps !
84 Vanagon passenger model I believe. Real nice people too !
