Herbert,

Go ahead and upgrade your system for 134a, then install Freeze 12 refrigerant. Perfectly legit, and Freeze 12 is almost a straight across performance equivalent to Freon R12.. The problem with the R134a is the higher operating pressures that re imposed on the compressor. There is a fairly high failure rate of the compressors if left running on R134a.
