I second what Steve says about the galley plug - my '81 lost that plug (and had a bad rear main seal) as I was pulling into a parking lot one day. Luckily I only traveled about 50 feet before parking because the only thing I noticed was a slightly different sound to the engine that I probably wouldn't have caught at freeway speeds due to the wind noise. I lost all of my oil in about two minutes without the engine running, my van vomiting it all over the parking lot. And then to top it off, the clutch got covered in oil so it needed to be replaced as well. I would get that taken care of ASAP or at least find out if that is the source of the leak - but you might want to get a second opinion from a vdub guy if this particular mechanic isn't one...
