The new Volkswagens cars have electronic speedometers, and no cable. The only thing that passes through the firewall on them are wires. The VSS on the transmission has three wires going to it, I believe they're 12V, ground, and the signal wire. It uses a Hall sender for the speedo, you might just need to find a compatible VSS that threads into your transmission.
