The only things inside that "Black box" are a mileage counter and a switch that gets tripped.

The "Hall Effect" sender that Vanagons have in their distributors wouldn't be suitable for a speedometer as it shows engine rpm not speed down the road.

Unless you can make or buy a VSS that you could attach to a CV joint, your electronic speedometer just won't work on a Vanagon.
