All you need to know, and visually look at on your 2WD vanagon .........is whether you have a large ( looks like 3 or 4 inches diameter ) metal ( gold colored if you clean off the dirt ) ........filler pipe in your right front wheel well.

OR.............a more slender ( looks lilke 2 and 2/3 inches ) black plastic filler neck. I think I've seen some 84's with bigger filler neck......so in my opion you can't really go by that '83' thing - you look at your van !

You can use either in any 2WD vanagon - you just need to make sure you have a filler neck that matches the filler neck hole in your gas tank.

as long as you keep the two together, matching tank and filler neck, the tanks will fit in any year 2WD vanagon .

the black plastic filler neck.......the later style..............is about 4 times easier to deal with than the earlier larger metal one.

getting tiny screws started in this cast metal top piece is a real bear in the early one. I've struggled there an hour easiy.

the later small black plastic one is a breeze to deal with in caparison. scott www.turbovans.com
