I installed a small powered subwoofer (JVC CS-BB2, see link below) in the empty space beneath the driver's seat in the cavity Ron mentions. The existing foam material under the seat prevents it from sliding around and buzzing, the bass is right where you can feel it, it's easy to power from the aux battery, and the subwoofer's volume knob can dangle through the gap at the front of the seat pedestal just under your knees for convenient access while driving.

The unit won't wake up the neighbors, but it is well suited for my needs. I think the cavity is also well suited for an amp. I don't have a seat swivel on my driver's side (weekender), so I can't say if the unit would fit if you have swivels.
