What do you think will be powering cars in 15 years? Flux Capacitors? Dilithium crystals? I'd be surprised if it's anything other than internal combustion or electric motors, both of which should be able to work in a Vanagon, given some degree of work/money spent.

You're right, though, most people won't bother.
