Thanks to Florian for sending the pictures of his Van with rack... as well as the fake gutters I've been looking at: http://www.a1-autoracks.com/yakima-control-tower-track-rack.html

My problem is that I have very little clearance between the top of my Van, and the garage door frame (about 2"), so I want something that is easily put on and offable. I'm aiming to carry a hang glider, possibly 2... these things clock in at around 60lbs packed up, but are very long. At the moment we tie one to a 12" ladder on the Subaru's roof rack, and I'm pretty sure we'll keep doing this with the Van.

Has anybody used these permanent mounts? My understanding is that I'll screw a track to the roof (probably have to cut it in half to do so, but I can manage that with adult supervision), then the bases go in and the towers clip to them. Sounds easy, right?
