Subject: Actual weight of VW LT35 and where to get parts from the US plus
              swapping Volvco turbodiesel
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

Hello Folks,

I realize the bigger brother of the Vanagon has it's engine in the wrong place but don't know where else to turn for this info. Postings in the Brickyard Forums remained unanswered concerning the ACTUAL weight of the empty van. The transport company I am contracting with wants to know the empty weight. The LT35 in question is the one posted on this list about a month ago. I'm needing to ge it shipped from So.California some 400miles north to San Francisco.

Anyway, I am also trying to locate a source for parts who are willing to ship to the US. Maybe from the Kingdom of Canadia?

I was at a local VW repair shop called Tassi's yesterday and spotted a Volvo 740 being repaired. It was getting new injectors installed in it's inline-6 VW turbodiesel engine. I'm planning on picking up one of these engines and swapping out the 4-cyl. gas engine in my LT now. For those who are curious, the early LT's like my 76, had Audi engines such as those found in the early Porsche 924's. The difference is they are tuned for torque vs. speed. The engines were woefully underpowered for the 924's let alone in the huge (and heavy) LT trucks. Sometime in the early 80's VW put a 6-cyl version of the venerable 1.9td engines into the LT's. Shortly thereafter, Volvo acquired some of the engines for use in their 740 cars.

For me this is coming full circle. Those engines never found their way into any VW's sent to the US to the best of my knowledge. However, they are not that rare in Volvo cars. I will acquire one for swapping into the chassis it was originally designed for. Who knows, maybe it will find it's way behind the back end of some Vanagon (albeit with some cutting of sheetmetal).=)

TIA,

BenT
