I'm no expert on this, but I think that for subs to work "free-air" or
"infinite baffle", the front and back sides of the sub need to be completely
separated, otherwise the waves off the back and front will cancel and you'll
get almost no low frequency response. Subs that are rated as suitable for
free-air setups are able to deal with the fact that there is no back
pressure, causing greater woofer movement, but they still need the back
waves sealed off from the front. My original plan when installing my system
was to put a shallow mount sub mounted infinite baffle in the kickboard of
the rear seat. After doing some research, I decided this wouldn't work well
since the underseat compartment isn't sealed. Infinite baffle setups
actually have a reputation of being more difficult to setup well. I ended
up building a box that fit snugly under part of the rear seat.
