The kids didn't ride in the car because it had no seatbelts. The article (or
maybe some of the comments) noted that lights were used because they didn't
have the proper outdoor space for a proper set up.
I agree that the over all experiment as conducted was not energy efficient
but the idea was to get these Highschool kids thinking about alternative
fuels.
The overall point is that this is the generation who is going to be faced
with coming up with solutions. Sure it was far from perfect but it was also
a step in a direction that gets them thinking, raised their awareness, and
increased their interest.
