The "real" apostrophe shares a glyph in common with the right single quote.

For Windows, alt-0146 (numbers on the keypad) should work. Mac: option-shift-] Linux: too many variables, try control-shift-8217 from command line, use compose key in X. HTML: &rsquo or &#x2019;

The common "'" character works just fine for normal communication, but someone who's being anal about apostrophes shouldn't be making that mistake, especially when giving examples. Yes, the misuse of an apostrophe in the previous sentence was deliberate, I don't often complain about such mistakes in informal communication. :-)
