I found that the winch method (similar to the saw horse method) worked great.

Like this:

It dropped the air cooled engine out pretty easily (though I f'd up a lttle scrunching the chain up against a piece of plastic ducting.... cracked it) and worked *great* for putting the Jetta engine in.

It's easy to make.

I needed to add chunks of wood to raise it (to clear intake runners on Jetta engine) but like I said, worked great.
