I think the stat is that it take 4x more energy to go 2x faster - so the
slower you go the better fuel economy you get. Hence the Bugatti
Veyron needing 1001hp achieve it's top speed. At 1001hp output the
massive fuel tank is emptied in minutes too!
If I drive my
Volkswagen LT 4x4 at 100km/h I get about 18L to 22L per 100km depending on
wind speed and what I am carrying. No matter how you look at it,
that's a lot of fuel - considering that my Touareg TDI need about half of
that. At 80km/h, the speed the LT was designed to run at (trucks
over 3.5T in Germany are restricted to 80km/h for the most part), I get a
more reasonable 13 to 16L per 100km. Besides saving over $5 per
100km in fuel, it is also less noisy so I can enjoy my tunes more and
easier to drive. Because of that my blood pressure is lower and I am
not as fatigued when I get where I am going I think I am going to live
longer too. The difference between Quesnel and Prince George return
trip, for example, is almost $20 in fuel so I can buy a nice lunch and
really the time difference one way is about 10 minutes or slightly more -
a few more MP3s - great big deal. Speeding is over rated over short
trips.
