Subject: Gas to Diesel conversion Legal in CA
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Fellow Vanners,

I've been thinking of changing my 87 syncro to diesel power. The 14-15 mpg in town being the main reason. The 17 plus at 60 mph on the highway is the other. Even at 70 cents a gallon cost increase 25 mpg is a money saver and I don't have to stop every 200 miles.

I checked with the State of Ca on doing this. Bureau of Automotive Repair is the controlling group. Glen on their tech line says:

Engine must be newer than the model year of the vehicle and

Engine must be appropriate to the weight application.

He knew both about diesels and vans in particular. Has done conversions of this type.

He claims that the TDI is a much better deal than the TD, even the TD with intercooler.

Anyone know of a conversion person in Northern California or a TDI for sale?

Or actually a TD [AAZ] for sale as I think I could live with the lower power?

Any errors in grammar or spelling are cheerfully acknowledged to be mine. But if you understand what's being said don't bother to bring it to my attention as it will simply depress me.

TIA

Mike in Marin County CA
