Unfortunately, the "google" method of searching doesn't really work, and may miss the messages you're looking for, since google appears not to completely index the archives. I've found that the most reliable way of searching the archives is by email, using the instructions here: http://gerry.vanagon.com/info/searching.html You can give date ranges, authors, etc. After getting the search results, you can retrieve the messages by email using the commands given on that webpage, but if I'm interested in reading a thread, I'll usually find the message in the web archives by browsing by date, which will be listed in the search results). Obviously, this is a pain in the butt, but, as far as I know, it is the ONLY way of searching the archives right now that is actually guaranteed to work. Google misses (lots) of messages, and the web archive search times out 90% of the time.

Please note - During the past 17 years of operation, several gigabytes of
Vanagon mail messages have been archived. Searching the entire collection
will take up to five minutes to complete. Please be patient!
