I've 2 91 Vans (one non-GL syncro passenger, the other a syncro westy). The AC works in both. Both were converted over to R134, but now I use Duracool. I'm very pleased with the performance. On my 86 Syncro I also use Duracool and it works even better (icicles during the summer time.) Main difference between these is, I believe when the 86 was converted (at the dealer) they put in a nozzle at the evaporator for R134, as opposed to on the others, I don't believe the nozzle at the evaporator was changed.
